On September 17, 2024, the sky will showcase the Harvest Moon, the full moon that aligns with the autumn equinox. This special event provides extended twilight and marks the arrival of fall. This year, the Harvest Moon is also going to be the second Supermoon of this season. Discover what makes this lunar display unique and how to best experience its beauty.

What is the Harvest Moon?

The Harvest Moon is the full moon that appears closest to the autumnal equinox, which usually falls around late September. This moon is named for its role in providing extra light during the harvest season, helping farmers work longer into the evening. It rises soon after sunset, giving extended twilight.

What Makes This Harvest Moon Special?

On September 17, 2024, the Harvest Moon will also be a Supermoon. This means the Moon will be at its closest point to Earth in its orbit, known as perigee. As a result, it will appear about 14% larger and 30% brighter than usual. In addition, there will be a partial lunar eclipse during this event, where 4% of the Moon’s surface will be darkened by Earth’s shadow. This combination makes the 2024 Harvest Moon an especially stunning sight.

When to See the Harvest Moon

The Super Harvest Moon will reach its peak at 10:34 PM EDT (03:34 AM IST on September 18, 2024). For the best viewing, head outside around sunset. The Moon will rise around 7:45 PM EDT, and in India, it will rise around 6:23 PM IST. The Moon will look its biggest and brightest when it first rises, thanks to the “Moon illusion.”

When, Where, and How to See the Lunar Eclipse

The partial lunar eclipse will occur on the night of September 17-18, 2024, alongside the Super Harvest Moon. The eclipse will be visible in many parts of the world, particularly across North America, Europe, Africa, and parts of Asia.

  • When: The eclipse will begin at 8:41 PM EDT (00:41 GMT on September 18), reaching its maximum at 10:14 PM EDT (02:14 GMT).
  • Where: The best views will be in North America and parts of Europe. For those in North America, you can see the eclipse between 8:30 PM and 10:30 PM EDT. In Europe, the eclipse will be visible in the early morning hours of September 18.
  • Visibility in India: Unfortunately, the partial lunar eclipse will not be visible in India. The Moon will set below the horizon before the eclipse begins. However, Indian viewers will experience the penumbral phase, which is subtle and difficult to detect.
  • How: No special equipment is required to view the eclipse. However, binoculars or a telescope will enhance your experience.

Best Viewing Tips

To get the best view of the Super Harvest Moon, go outside shortly after sunset and look towards the eastern horizon. The Moon will appear larger and more vivid near the horizon, making for a stunning sight. Enjoy this beautiful lunar event and the extra light it provides during the harvest season.

Previous and Upcoming Harvest Moons

  • Previous Harvest Moon: The Harvest Moon last year was on September 29, 2023. It was a clear and bright moon, perfect for enjoying the start of fall and its extra evening light.
  • Upcoming Harvest Moon: After the Super Harvest Moon on September 17, 2024, the next one will be on September 17, 2025. While this future moon won’t be as special as the 2024 Supermoon, it will still be a lovely sight marking the arrival of autumn.

Each year’s Harvest Moon offers something unique, and while the 2024 one is extra special, the Harvest Moon always adds a touch of magic to the fall season.
